New candidate running for membership of the Steering Committee

Grainne Devine,Bord Iascaigh Mhara

Environmental Officer, Seafood Technical Services, Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM)

Biography:
I have been working as an environmental officer with BIM since 2005 and in that time have gained wide ranging experience of the marine and seafood sectors. I helped to deliver the world’s first independently accredited Eco-standard for aquaculture in 2007 and have worked with Irish aquaculture businesses to achieve a variety of third party environmental and sustainability accreditations, from Organic certification in compliance with EU regulations, to Origin Green the national sustainability programme for food.

Currently, I am leading the BIM programme for invasive species management for the aquaculture sector seeking to minimise risks to and from the sector and develop procedures for rapid response in the event of new high risk species being discovered. I am a practitioner member of IEMA (Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment), hold an MSc in Coastal Zone Management from Ulster University, a BSc (Honors) in Environmental Geoscience from Edinburgh University and a Diploma in EIA and SEA Management from UCD.

What Grainne will bring to the Forum:
I would like to help to bring the marine dimension into the scope of the work of Irish Forum on Natural Capital. I have been following international developments in this area and am excited by the opportunities for better understanding and managing relationships and resources.  The seafood sector is highly dependent on natural capital and has both negative and positive impacts upon it. During 2019, BIM plan to examine the role of natural capital accounting for the seafood sector exploring how it fits with measuring and demonstrating environmental performance and how this can contribute to environmental management decisions and improve the resilience of the sector.
