Irish Natural Capital Accounting for Sustainable Environments (INCASE) was an EPA-funded research project running from 2019-2023. INCASE is the first Irish project to develop natural capital accounts for different sites in Ireland. The project team prepared accounts for four catchments across Ireland using the UN System of Environmental-Economic Accounting-Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EA). Accounts for the four catchments mapped the stocks and flows of ecosystem and geosystem services, highlighting challenges, knowledge and data gaps, and recommends a framework to operationalise Natural Capital Accounting in Ireland.

8 Key Recommendations from the INCASE Project:

1. Developing and using Natural Capital / Ecosystem Accounting is a national priority for Ireland. 2. Increased expertise is required for operationalisation of ecosystem accounting in Ireland. 3. A detailed, high-resolution ecosystem map is required. 4. Ecosystem condition assessment needs further development. 5. The relationship between extent and condition of natural capital assets and flows of services and benefits requires more nuanced understanding. 6. Ecosystem service assessment needs a standardised approach. 7. A centralised data platform is required. 8. Not all accounts should be monetised.
