University College Cork

I am a Director of the Centre for Co-operative Studies, UCC and Co-director of the award-wining MSc Sustainable Development, Agri-food and Co-operatives. I have always had a keen interest in the role of landscape and place as a communications, educational and practical medium for transitioning to a sustainable and regenerative society, also how a natural capital lens could facilitate and develop the collaborative and regenerative-enabling capability of organisations and communities within a landscape. I have been a member of the NCI steering committee from 2022-2024 and PI on the EPA-funded (2024-2028) DStream (Dairy Sustainability through Regenerative Experimentation and Mindsets) which explores enablers of regenerative experimentation on dairy farms. I am also a Co-PI of the Swoboda-funded 'Transitioning to environmental sustainability and regeneration: the role of credit unions,'. I am also a member of the AKIS CAP Network Co-ordination Group (2023- 2025).

I bring extensive hands-on experience in valuing and restoring ecosystems, underpinned by a deep commitment to see Ireland’s natural landscapes thrive. With a career spanning over 25 years and deep knowledge in natural capital, biodiversity and nature advocacy, I have led transformative initiatives that marry ecological insight with tangible impact. A key strength lies in uniting diverse voices and building ‘uncommon collaborations’ across policy-makers, industry and communities/stakeholders, effectively turning complex ecological needs into actionable, lasting solutions that protect and enrich our environment. I am deeply passionate about ensuring our ecosystems are not only valued on paper, but truly cherished, restored, and protected in practice. Driven by a vision of a resilient Irish landscape that supports both nature and people, I am eager to bring my expertise and dedication to NCI, an organisation that leads this urgent mission while bridging the interconnected goals of nature, climate, and social equity.

This leadership has allowed winning of numerous awards including SEAI, Bord Bia and IBEC awards. I have been on the NCI Steering Committee since 2022 and my primary motivation for joining is to help drive a natural capital approach, both in Uisce Eireann/formerly Irish Water and nationally, through leading by example. With a large portfolio of assets nationwide, Uisce Eireann can make a significant contribution to a natural capital approach.

Economics for the Environment Consultancy (Ireland)

I work in the natural capital branch of a London-based Environmental Economics Consultancy, eftec, now in Ireland, so have practical experience of applying the natural capital approach to a range of sectors of varying scales and objectives, in different countries. I have a farming background and have always had a deep love of the environment. As a committee member of the Drummin Bog Project, I have direct experience of some of the challenges faced while trying to conserve and restore our natural landscape. Through my work, I have seen the importance of integrating natural capital into decision-making but also the challenges and limitations of the approach. I think what NCI is doing is really important and would like to contribute directly to their expansion and influence in Ireland.

Scott Cawley Ltd

Asst Chair of the NCI Steering Committee since 2022, I am an ecologist with over 15 years of experience in ecological/environmental assessment and environmental management across both the private and public sector. I have a skillset in business and people management, development and leadership. I also have a keen interest in environmental law and policy, and how this shapes the work of the practitioners as well as the future for our society. I like to assimilate complex problems/situations and develop a multi-faceted strategy to deliver results. I'm a subject matter expert in ecology now managing the operational side of a company to develop and execute strategies to ensure the company is working towards achieving its vision. This involves supporting a team of ecologists to deliver a nature positive agenda in a ‘boots on the ground’ capacity. With the vision of the company being very similar to NCI’s, I can input to, help drive and deliver the natural capital agenda at a more strategic and national level.

Breeding Waders EIP

I am a passionate conservationist, with in-depth knowledge of the factors driving biodiversity loss in Ireland and climate change internationally. Given my current role as Senior Project Manager with the Breeding Waders EIP, I am well placed to assess shortfalls in current policy and funding models. EIPs are collaborative by nature, so I am attuned to the 'on-the-ground' issues as well as the policy and research briefs that accompany modern conservation. I am an experienced communicator. I fundamentally believe that biodiversity loss in Ireland is the biggest single crisis facing our nation. Many factors influence this and many stakeholders are involved, therefore it is vital all funding streams are fully utilised to drive change.

Martha O'Hagan

Trinity College Dublin

I am engaged in teaching and research in the area of Sustainable Finance. I previously worked in banking and so have good familiarity with the financial industry but am also deeply invested in exploring the role that the financial sector can play in redirecting capital flows towards sustainable economic activity, providing incentives that incorporate the social and environmental value of economic activity and ensuring that externalities are reflected in the true value of any asset. In a second term on the NCI Steering Committee, I would like to further develop how we can work towards correctly valuing our natural assets in order to protect those assets, and how we can incorporate that value into the financial sector.

Jimmy O'Keeffe

Dublin City University

I am a hydrologist and lecturer in environmental systems at DCU where I have co-developed Irelands first undergraduate course in Climate and Environmental Sustainability. I have over 14 years’ experience working on natural capital and ecosystem services in Ireland, UK and South Asia, with farmers, developers, regulatory authorities and governments, and helped organise Ireland's Children and Young People’s Assembly on Biodiversity Loss. I use interdisciplinary approaches, particularly stakeholder engagement and systems modelling to improve our understanding of the links and feedbacks between humans and the natural environment. I believe that positive societal engagement is critical to improving our natural environment and that NCI has a crucial role to play. I have been a member of NCI since 2020 and have chaired the NCI Steering Committee since 2022. I believe expanding natural capital and ecosystem services from the academic-policy sphere to a more familiar, accessible and useful resource is key to societal and natural environment sustainability. I lead the Science Foundation of Ireland-funded project VniC-Health (Valuing Natural Capital in Communities for Health) which applies the approach to evaluate benefits of green spaces in an urban setting. I will also lead an upcoming project, working with farmers to identify and evaluate natural capital and ecosystem services on Irish farms.

Hannah O'Kelly

Wicklow County Council

I was fortunate enough to spend two decades developing conservation monitoring systems at a landscape scale across Southeast Asia, during which time I completed a PhD with Imperial College and Zoological Society of London. My research has been interdisciplinary, but with a strong quantitative basis, looking at interactions between illegal hunting, conservation interventions and target populations. I am also a founder of a not-for-profit company, with the objective of enabling more effective approaches to protected area management, such as conservation concessions. I have also worked as consultant on large-scale government-to-government development projects, for which I designed impact evaluation measures. My experience, therefore, spans multi-stakeholder engagement, fostering collaboration among NGOs, government agencies, and research institutions. On my return to Ireland, I was pleased to join a growing network of biodiversity officers, tasked with transposing national and international policy and legislation into local action. My primary motivation for joining the NCI Steering Committee is to help advance Ireland's approach to integrating biodiversity and natural capital in decision-making. With my experience in policy development and biodiversity management, I aim to support NCI’s efforts to embed sustainable, evidence-based practices across sectors.

As a recognised Sustainability Leader and award-winning multimedia climate journalist, my mission is to improve climate communications. I have an MS in Environmental Science from Trinity College Dublin coupled with a Photojournalism background, thus I am equipped in collecting, analysing, and presenting information in versatile formats for diverse audiences. My journalism and research has focused on socioeconomic challenges of the climate crisis. Most notably, I attended COP28 as a virtual delegate and afterward organised, promoted, and moderated a college-wide panel discussion with other delegates to share findings and stimulate relevant discussion. I am determined to participate on the NCI Steering Committee with intentions of increasing climate literacy and improving climate communications between multiple parties. In a climate crisis, utilising media including journalism is critical for mitigating misinformation and bringing awareness to tangible climate solutions. Collective action depends on collective knowledge, and NCI is a valuable network and platform for citizens, policymakers, researchers, and other stakeholders, requiring effective and meaningful media engagement.

Derrybawn Mountain

I am an Irish scientist and member of the Wicklow Uplands Council. I have been involved in the global Natural Capital initiative, which started in Stanford, USA, and China, since 2003. I understand case studies, of how other countries and sectors have applied natural capital, in planning, policy, and, most importantly, for practical action on farms, in nature reserves, and for counties. I would like Ireland to explore the natural capital approach at local, project and programme level.

As a research assistant on a natural capital project for Research Ireland, I lead stakeholder workshops, policy development, and am co-authoring an academic paper on our research findings. I’ve produced a policy briefing circulated widely among government and civil society, engaging directly with heads of departments in Dublin City Council and city councillors. My experience also includes interning for politicians, equipping me with strong skills in policy development and engagement. I hope to join the steering committee as I believe natural capital accounting will be essential in driving the green transition. I believe its application and impact could and should be widespread, and I really want to play a role in helping to advance this agenda. With my skills in policy development, I wish to support efforts to integrate natural capital accounting at the government level and promote its adoption as policy by a policy party.
